History is interpreted differently in 3 countries (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) about 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh.

For Bangladeshis it was Bangladesh and Pakistan war. For Pakistan and India it was Indo-Pakistani war.

Mukti Bahini (Bangladeshi guerrilla force) is considered a separatist ‘terrorist’ group by Pakistanis. For Bangladeshis they are the main heroes. For Indians they are ‘supporting’ actors in the war. Main heroes are Indian Jawans.

Now, read the truth.

1971 war was fought between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh where India-Bangladesh both jointly fought against Pakistan. East Pakistanis self-proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh on 26th March but it was not recognized till 6th December. There was no ‘officially recognized’ Bangladesh till 6 December when India and Bhutan both recognized the nation of Bangladesh. So before the recognition Bangladesh was still ‘East Pakistan’, a part of Pakistan. So the world views the war as India-Pakistan war, not Bangladesh-Pakistan war.

Mukti Bahini was formed by Indian army. There were training camps in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura for Mukti Bahini. Indian army trained the Bangladeshi (Then East Pakistani) guerrillas, provided weapons to fight against Pakistani army. India opened the border to shelter 1 crore (10 million) Bangladeshi refugees (Hindu, Muslim both), arranged food, medical facility. Also Bangladeshi singers were inspiring the Mukti Bahini guerrillas by singing patriotic nationalistic songs over radio which was set in Kolkata, West Bengal. The station was named, ‘Swadhin Bangla Betar Kentro’ (Free Bengal Radio Station). India gave 50 watt transmitter to broadcast the temporary radio station during the war.

Indian army also participated in the war directly by forming ‘Mitro Bahini’ (Ally force). Indian army was very active during the whole 9 months of war but officially it joined the war on 3rd December when Pakistan attacked India’s western region. Now the war turned in to a full fledged India-Pakistan war. The last 13 days of the war was the most crucial part. Pakistan couldn’t fight anymore with the local guerrillas when Mitro Bahini (Indian army) officially joined with Mukti Bahini. Pakistani army finally surrendered to India and Bangladesh joint forces on 16th December. Before the surrender Pakistani army was slowly loosing control over several districts of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) due to joint attack by Bangladeshi Mukti Bahini and Indian Mitro Bahini.

India likes to give all credits to Indian army for Bangladesh creation. Bangladesh likes to give all credits to Mukti Bahini guerrilla fighters.

Its high time both nations should settle the issue. India should give proper credit to Bangladeshi Mukti Bahini even if it was trained by Indian army and Bangladesh should give due credit to India for its contribution to liberate Bangladesh.
